In the spring of 1904 a baby girl was born to the Vajóv family in the village of Bístritsa, just outside of Sófia. Daughter of two consummate singers, Línka grew up to be one of the village’s most respected singers, with a repertoire of at least 200 songs. This book is a celebration of the songs of Línka Gérgova, and of Línka herself. It contains her entire repertoire, set against the background of her life—told in her own words in her inimitable fashion—and her descriptions of the customs and traditions that were the setting for her songs.		Martha Forsyth holds degrees in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Radcliffe College and UCLA. She first met traditional Bulgarian folk music as an undergraduate student and was quickly captivated by the vocal styles and the close harmo nies. As if by chance, among the first things she heard was a St. Lazarus’ Day song from Bístritsa . . . . In 1978 she began researching songs in Bulgarian villages, and has spent many a happy hour since then recording “old songs from old ladies”. One of those old ladies became a very special friend to Martha: Línka Gérgova, whose songs and whose story are the subject of this book.

Марта Форсайт завършва Славянски езици и литература в Радклиф коледж (Кеймбридж) и Калифорнийския университет (Лос Анджелес). За пръв път чува българска фолклорна музика през студентските си години и е запленена от певческите стилове и тесните съзвучия. Сякаш случайно една от първите песни, които чува, е лазарска песен от Бистрица . . . . През 1978 г. тя започва да събира песни из българските села и изживява много щастливи часове, записвайки “стари песни от стари баби”. Особено приятелство я свързва с една от тези стари жени: баба Линка Гергова, на чиито песни и живот е посветена тази книга.
